delivering the COLUMBUS DISPATCH

What's the Schedule?

The job of carrier for The Columbus Dispatch is a 365-day per year job. The paper is published every day of the year, and it will be your job to deliver it.

What's a Typical Night Like?

Your night begins with picking up the papers at your assigned Warehouse any time between 1:30 AM and 3:00 AM.

When you arrive, you will pick up your night’s share of newspapers. You will then put the papers into plastic bags, which will be provided to you.

Your load will contain The Dispatch but may contain other papers as well. The Dispatch has contracted to deliver other local, regional and national newspapers.

Your next step is to load your car with the bagged papers and start your route. You will drive the same route every night. You will have a Route Book, which contains each stop on the route that gets papers, any special instructions for that stop, and driving directions to the next stop. It’s a step-by-step guide that lays out your entire route.

You must be finished with your deliveries by 6:30 AM Monday through Friday, and 8:00 AM on weekends.

When your delivery is finished, your job is finished. You may go home or anywhere else you want.

How Long Will It Take?

You will be delivering about 150 papers Monday through Saturday The job will take 2-3 hours from start to finish. On Sunday, you will be delivering about 270 papers. The job on that day will take 4-5 hours.

That's  18-26 hours per week.

What Do I Need?

To qualify for this job, you will need:

  • A car, SUV or pickup truck in good condition
  • Proof of insurance. The policy must have you listed as a driver
  • A valid Drivers' License

BACKGROUND CHECKS AND DRUG TESTS ARE NOT REQUIRED

What Does It Pay?

Depending on the size of the route, the job pays between $250 and $350 per week. You will be paid every two weeks, by  check or Direct Deposit.

Can I Have Help?

Absolutely. You can have someone help you with the deliveries, or cover for you if you're sick or away. They have to have the same qualifications as you do for the job (car, insurance, etc.)

What Is My Job Status?

You're going to be an independent  1099 contractor, not an employee of the Dispatch. One advantage of this status is that you will be able to deduct gas and car usage on your income taxes.
